I despise doing the laundry. It is that ONE chore I would hire out (if I could afford it). Endless baskets of laundry taunt me … ha, ha, you can’t have a life on the weekend because there are 6-7 baskets of laundry to sort, wash, dry/hang, put away … AHHHHH – I don’t even like writing about it!
Insert sip of wine here and continue …
I have a high efficiency front load steam washer so finding a DIY liquid detergent that worked without a bubbly mess was a challenge and let me say this, “I was NOT about to grate soap for the detergent”. I had to find the absolute easiest liquid combination possible and I DID!
To say there is an abundance of DIY laundry detergent solutions online (and here I mean Pinterest) is an understatement. I found that many of the so-called natural, chemical-free DIY detergents contained the following:
Borax: EWG’s Borax Rating
Borax received an “F” on the EWG’s (Environmental Working Group) Guide to Healthy Cleaning scale. Borax is not ‘Green Certified’ and contains Sodium Borate which lends to its “F” rating.
The following comes directly from the EWG’s website: Sodium Borate – “High Concern: developmental/endocrine/reproductive effects; Some Concern: skin irritation/allergies/damage, respiratory effects”.
I don’t know about you, but I wouldn’t want that anywhere near me or my family.
*You can read more about this product (and many others) on the EWG’s website.
